Seoul Public Schools - SMOE

Teach at a public school in Korea!

Successful applicants will be required to conduct English conversation classes for Korean elementary, middle, or secondary school students in Seoul as part of the Korean Government's plan to promote and strengthen English language education.

Candidates should be creative, motivated, and enjoy working with young children as part of an academic team. Successful applicants are expected to focus on the development of oral communication skills using interactive teaching methods.

S.M.O.E. matches teachers with schools during the orientation period according to their abilities, experiences, and the individual interests of the teachers, as well as on availability of level requests.

Working Conditions
Type of Teaching Job: Public School
Contract Duration: 1 year
Contract Duration Comments: One year contract, open for renewal upon performance evaluation

Contract Details
Salary: 1.8m-3.0m won
Tax Rate: 2 years NO TAX for Americans, Australians, British, and New Zealand teachers (Canadian teachers pay taxes)
Airfare: Airfare Subsidized 1,300,000 krw reimbursed for each flight in the form of a transportation allowance
Housing: Free Furnished Single Housing, Monthly Housing Allowance Provided
Schedule: 8:30am-4:30pm (Monday to Friday)
Paid Vacation Days: 20 days
Health Insurance: local medical insurance provided
Health Insurance Comments: Korean National Health Care Plan
Relocation or Arrival Bonus: 300,000 settlement allowance paid within first couple of weeks of arrival to help teacher with settling in.
End of Contract Bonus: Upon finishing your contract you are paid 1 month¡¯s salary for each year you work for that employer - this is per Korean Labour Law


Required Documents

1. Application Form
- The applicant must fill out the SMOE application form, include a personal essay, self medical check form, and a passport sized photo.
- It must be typed (applicant¡¯s hand writing is not acceptable).

2. Formal Resume (including cover letter)
- A current resume and cover letter are required.

3. Two Reference Letters
- Friends or close relatives cannot issue this reference letter.
- An academic Professor or employer should issue this letter. The letter must have a letterhead, a method to contact the person including phone number, and must be signed.

 

  • Once You Are Accepted

1. Include your original university degree from an accredited university or college (Bachelor¡¯s Degree or higher), or a notarized copy. If you choose to use a notarized copy, you must attach an Apostille Authentication to it.

2. Official Sealed Transcript (BA and MA)
- Academic GPA will be requested in order to arrange a job interview with SMOE.

3. A Clear Copy of Your Passport (Photo page only)

4. Letter of Full-time Teaching Experience Proof (Minimum one full year of experience in the same school will be considered as full time teaching experience.)

5. Teaching Certification or Language Certificate (TESOL or CELTA)
Certified teachers must provide notarized copy of teaching certification and a Language certificate such as TESOL or TEFL course that is more than 100-hour credits (having this course could affect your rate of pay).

6. Criminal Record Check
- Notarized (Apostilled) criminal background check.
- Criminal record checks are only valid for six months after they are issued (Checks must be issued by the State Police Department level or above. Local Police Clearances are not acceptable).

7. Three Copies of Contract + Addenda
*Note: Addenda must be sent and only one copy requires.

8. A Completed and Sign Medical Evaluation Report (from provided by SMOE)

9. A Copy of Citizenship or Legal Residence Certificate (for Korean nationals)

10. If English is not your first language (born in a non-English speaking country, then you must be able to provide proof of English education beginning from junior high school level).

 

Benefits

  • These are the only public school teaching positions in Seoul.
  • A single leased house (apartment or studio-type room), as well as some basic household items will be provided by the SOME.
  • 1.3m krw cash support for flight ticket (twice for a year).
  • A settlement allowance of 300,000 krw will be provided for the first year.
